Instead of continuing to develop solutions that don\u2019t work, we need to redefine what it means to be an engineer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><br> &nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">There\u2019s a lack of diversity in engineering that no one seems to know how to fix. In 2018, as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/brandlab\/2015\/05\/5-numbers-explain-stem-diversity-matters-us\/\" style=\"text-decoration-line: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(17, 85, 204); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; text-decoration-line: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">8.6 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> made up the STEM workforce in the U.S., with the number of jobs consistently increasing more than in any other sector. But of those 8.6 million people, a whopping 84 percent were either Caucasian or Asian males. And while women make up the majority of undergraduate students in the U.S., only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asee.org\/papers-and-publications\/publications\/college-profiles\/15EngineeringbytheNumbersPart1.pdf\" style=\"text-decoration-line: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(17, 85, 204); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; text-decoration-line: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">21 percent of Bachelor\u2019s degrees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> awarded in engineering in 2015 were to female graduates.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s not that no one is talking about this issue \u2014 in fact, a large number of companies have begun to make it a priority. Organizations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/girlswhocode.com\/\" style=\"text-decoration-line: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(17, 85, 204); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; text-decoration-line: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Girls Who Code<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> have made it their mission to close the gender gap in technology, while larger companies like Google have begun to release <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.google\/annual-report\/\" style=\"text-decoration-line: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(17, 85, 204); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; text-decoration-line: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">annual diversity reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> and create roles like Chief Diversity Officer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Business executives now acknowledge that diversity is a key contributor to their bottom line, with findings from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/en-us\/publications\/2018\/how-diverse-leadership-teams-boost-innovation.aspx\" style=\"text-decoration-line: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(17, 85, 204); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; text-decoration-line: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">recent BCG study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> showing that more diverse leadership teams boost innovation and increase revenue by an average of 19 percent.<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">So if everyone seems to be on the same page about diversity in engineering, why aren\u2019t we seeing improvements in the industry?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-weight: 700; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Why Current Engineering Diversity Efforts Fall Short<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">To understand why these discouraging statistics persist, we need to better understand the limitations of current efforts to fix the problem. When we take a look at the industry, there are hundreds of suggestions centering around the people being recruited and an organization\u2019s approach to diversity. Articles with recommendations ranging from \u201cset up mentorship and training programs\u201d to \u201cmoving away from employee referrals could help increase diversity\u201d are a dime a dozen.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">But with these efforts producing lackluster results, it may be time to try something new.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Each of these solutions is based on a common assumption: that what it means to be an \u201cengineer\u201d is fixed and cannot change. As a result, all of our efforts naturally have involved finding and training more people to fit into the current paradigm.<\/span><\/span><\/p> \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p> \n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height:1.38;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-108659bd-7fff-bb8f-b2f1-2eebfb4255bc\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">But what if this assumption is a part of the problem? When an engineering skillset is highly specialized and restrictive, the field will inherently exclude a large number of people.
