Unqork Receives FedRAMP® Authorization

Hear from Unqork’s CISO on how Federal Agencies can now securely leverage codeless development—the next step beyond no-code—to significantly accelerate their move to the cloud

Unqork, the first and only enterprise-grade Codeless-as-a-Service (CaaS) cloud platform, today received authorization from the US Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). This authorization gives federal agencies the confidence to accelerate their move to the cloud with Unqork’s platform.

To empower agencies to use modern cloud technologies, FedRAMP provides a standardized approach for assessing, monitoring, and authorizing cloud computing products and services under the Federal Information Security Modernization Act of 2014 (FISMA 2014).

Purpose-built for secure codeless enterprise services

Unqork started its FedRAMP journey with a sponsorship from HHS in the Fall of 2021. The initial Unqork for Government package was awarded the FedRAMP “In-Process” designation in January 2022.

Subsequently, in September 2022, Human Health and Services (HHS) became the first Federal agency to grant Unqork an Authorization to Operate (ATO). Unqork operates the only enterprise codeless service management cloud platform granted ATO status to date.

Unqork, which was founded in 2017 and began the FedRAMP authorization process in 2021, achieved FedRAMP moderate authorization with unprecedented speed. Unqork’s effort underscores its belief that the public sector, in particular the Federal market, will play a significant role in the company’s future growth.

This achievement also speaks to the integrity and discipline with which the Unqork platform is built. And it demonstrates to the wider market that it provides a strong foundation on which to grow into the future.

Agencies can securely embrace codeless development

With FedRAMP authorization, agencies can take advantage of Unqork’s support for codeless architecture—a new open development standard that empowers organizations to build complex software without writing, managing, or even seeing a line of code.

Powered by a single data definition, Codeless as a Service transcends the limits of low-code/no-code platforms, which often require manual coding for complex, custom applications. Even when developers don’t need to write code themselves, low-code/no-code platforms themselves automatically generate new code. In both cases, enterprises end up bearing the cost and risk of managing that net-new code, whether it is manually or automatically generated.

By contrast, Unqork’s Codeless as a Service platform generates zero net-new code, not even automatically generated code. Developers just drag and drop modular components within an entirely visual environment, enabling agencies to build applications in a visual, modular, secure, and scalable way. And by eliminating legacy code, CaaS eliminates the costs associated with its maintenance and the security issues it introduces.

CaaS can help agencies significantly lower total cost of ownership (TCO) for a number of reasons. With zero net-new code, users are generating zero tech debt and eliminating all the risks of shadow IT, from disconnected tools to hidden security threats. It enables agencies to securely connect to internal, legacy, and third-party systems and databases quickly and seamlessly as soon as those interconnections are approved. It also makes application development entirely visual by transforming complex software elements (UX, business logic, integrations) into drag-and-drop components.

In addition, clients building on Unqork can import and export the workflows of the applications themselves. This helps free agencies from vendor lock-in and allows them to move forward with modernization initiatives with the confidence that their business processes can be exported and reused.

How commercial clients benefit from Unqork’s FedRAMP authorization

Existing commercial customers also receive significant benefits from Unqork’s FedRAMP authorization. For example, to meet FedRAMP standards Unqork implemented new capabilities for threat detection, response, and continuous monitoring, all of which introduce increased rigor in vulnerability management. Commercial customers will also benefit from improvements in terms of Unqork’s security processes, as well as from enhanced capabilities of the platform itself.

Best of all, commercial customers reap these benefits without having to upgrade or make any change at all to existing applications, even if they involve changes to the platform. Why? Because Unqork’s platform is codeless. That means the underlying platform can evolve with zero changes to existing applications—a great example of the power of a truly codeless architecture.

The new frontier is codeless

We’re in a time of extremely rapid change and transformation, and some really amazing things have grown out of traditional development paradigms. However, the new frontier of software development is codeless. And it is poised to help government agencies make rapid strides in their transformational journey.

Building applications started with punch cards, then programming languages, then low code. Now it’s time for codeless. With Unqork, you shift the modernization mindset from a focus on the “how” to a focus on the “what.” You empower your problem solvers to focus on solutions, and let Unqork handle the “how” securely.

Take the CaaS self-guided tour to experience Unqork, the world’s first 100% codeless enterprise-grade platform.

For 70% of businesses surveyed, codeless architecture is key to digital transformation

Legacy Software and Code Bogging Down Your Organization? Think Codeless, Study Finds

Is traditional coding becoming a thing of the past? For many organizations, the answer is a resounding yes, according to a new Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Unqork.

Six in 10 companies surveyed said reducing their reliance on code is a strategic priority for the business. More striking, seven in 10 believe shifting to a codeless architecture approach is important, even critical, to digital transformation.

Unqork commissioned Forrester Consulting to assess how legacy code, technical debt, and old systems bog down software engineering teams and stifle innovation—and how adopting modern codeless development methods can alleviate this pain.

Forrester conducted an online survey of 312 IT and digital strategy

decision-makers across industries to evaluate codeless architecture application development. Participants, based in North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific, came from across industries, including government, healthcare, technology & technology services, financial services, and insurance organizations.

Hidden (and not-so-hidden) costs of custom code

When it comes to traditional coding, the study found that two challenges stood out—slower innovation and security risks.

For most respondents, legacy code and tools delay new technology projects. For example, 69% reported that developers are being pulled back from new projects because they must maintain existing software. And 53% said that they delay or shelve new technology projects in order to allocate resources to maintain old ones.

When asked how a significant change in requirements in the middle of a major new app development project would impact a project, 59% of respondents developing apps with custom code said they would have to start all over again, and another 33% said it would have a significant impact.

Respondents also expressed reservations about the impact on security of legacy software. In fact, it was the top reported concern among respondents.

Breaking free from code

Given these concerns, it’s not surprising that 60% of companies surveyed said reducing reliance on code is a strategic priority—and that for 70%, a codeless architecture approach is important to digital transformation.

Low-code solutions reduce coding, but the study found that they still result in lots of new legacy code to create and manage. “Companies using low code platforms, for example, often still use custom code for highly specific UI/UX behavior, complex logic, and integration,” the study’s authors write.

Codeless architecture takes an entirely different approach by removing code even from these more complex use cases.

It may sound futuristic, but it’s already here. And it’s already driving innovation.

“With codeless technologies like Unqork, you’re able to be closer to what the business needs are, what the client needs are, what the solution needs are,“ says Joseph Lo, Vice President, Wealth Production Innovation, Broadridge. “And you’re able to impact those changes in a much closer way to what the solution requires than with traditional models.”

The codeless revolution is just beginning. Only 10% of the study’s respondents have gone completely codeless—i.e. no hand-coding at all. That means organizations that go codeless now have the opportunity, as early adopters, to gain a significant advantage over competitors.

“We’re at the point where we’re struggling to figure out the next thing we want to port over to Unqork’s codeless platform, because there are just so many options,” says Ross Ball, Dev Ops Lead, The Workforce Group.

Why Codeless Is Such a Big Hit, per New Study

Improved application security, increased competitive differentiation, and acceleration of review and approval workflows are just a few of the reasons

Organizations are facing a major software development crisis, with demand for modern applications outstripping available talent. In fact, leading market intelligence firm IDC predicts a shortfall of four million developers by 2025. Meanwhile, IT leaders say the resources they do have spend too much time managing legacy code, according to a new Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Unqork.

What can IT leaders do in response to this crisis? Clearly, manual coding—long the backbone of enterprise software—is not the solution. In fact, 60% of companies surveyed by Forrester Consulting said reducing their reliance on code is a strategic priority for the business

So, how can IT decision-makers achieve both goals—better software, less code—at the same time? The Forrester Consulting study found that 70% of companies believe shifting to a codeless approach is critical or  important to digital transformation success

“Expected benefits of codeless architecture include improved application security, increased competitive differentiation, and acceleration of review and approval workflows,” the report authors found. In other words, codeless addresses their challenges head on. Of the more than 300 respondents,

  • 55% said codeless would improve application security
  • 54% said it would increase competitive differentiation
  • 53% it would improve software review and approval workflows
  • 53% said it would improve end-of-life software transition

Where code and low-code fall short

Change is inevitable when it comes to developing and managing software. Yet change has also been expensive, research shows—especially when it comes late in the development process or after a project is complete.

For example, 59% of respondents who develop apps with custom code said they would have to start all over again if there was a significant change in requirements in the middle of a major new app development project. Another 33% said it would have a significant impact.

Businesses using low-code declarative tools fared better. Still, 80% of respondents said such changes would have a moderate or major impact.

That is not a surprise, given that 70% of respondents said applications developed on low-code platforms are harder or require the same amount of maintenance and updates as using traditional methods.

The way forward is codeless

In short, both traditional code and low-code leave IT leaders stuck between a rock and a hard place. So what can they do? For the large majority of study respondents (70%), codeless architecture represents a way forward.

True, many respondents, accustomed to the limitations of low-code platforms, still have reservations about codeless. Around two in three (65%) believe codeless cannot meet all their development needs, including highly specific UI / UX behavior, complex logic, and integrations.

That may have been true for low-code platforms, but codeless technology, which is evolving at breakneck speed, has already overcome these limitations. Indeed, Unqork’s Codeless-as-a-Service platform can now handle extremely complex use cases—without zero code.

Here are just a few of the organizations that have already used Unqork’s platform to build complex, secure, and compliant solutions:

  • Chubb, the world’s largest insurance broker, digitized its end-to-end brokerage process with Unqork. The new, unified UX increases broker engagement in value-add activities such as new business generation and client strategy.
  • Leading investment banking, securities, and investment management firm Goldman Sachs built a fully digital, secure value acceleration portal with Unqork’s codeless platform.
  • Using Unqork, the City of New York developed a COVID emergency response management system and virtualized services in just 72 hours. The solution handled delivery of food and critical medical supplies to hundreds of thousands of residents and front-line workers.

“A lot of our stuff has been difficult to modernize and digitize for web experiences,” adds Joseph Lo, Vice President, Wealth Production Innovation at global Fintech leader Broadridge. “Unqork has been a big help for us, and we’re using their platform to incrementally go through some of our most important applications and bring them to modern web land.”

NYSE Floor Talk: Gary Hoberman, CEO & Founder, Unqork

Fo

Founder & CEO Gary Hoberman tells NYSE Floor Talk how Unqork is enabling enterprises to deliver the promise and value of technology which has been locked and bottled up for years.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Floor Talk series invited Gary Hoberman to discuss the ways Unqork’s Codeless-as-a-Service (CaaS) platform is transforming the way organizations build, run, and manage software, from government agencies and tech startups to financial giants Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Chubb.

“Enterprise tech has been painful to create, and even more painful to maintain,” explained Hoberman. In response, Unqork pioneered a new way forward based on an entirely codeless architecture, which differentiates Unqork’s pioneering CaaS offering from low-code/no-code providers.

Above all, Hoberman told the NYSE audience, Unqork speeds and increases value creation. By removing code from the equation, organizations can not only accelerate development, but also unleash creativity by removing painstaking coding—and the resulting tech debt—off the plates of the developers.

“Now, engineers spend time core differentiators, rather than moving a button around a screen,” said Hoberman.
